Now that my parents live in Brighton, Michigan, I will finally be going to the Detroit Autoshow after far too many years away. However, I will be going the second Saturday, the 25th. Should I avoid Jalopnik for a week to be surprised? Or just read the reports on Jalopnik anyway? Decisions, decisions...

Just read the reports. It's like looking at pictures of a place, then getting excited to be there and see it for yourself. Seeing pictures and seeing things in person are totally different.

Anything truly worthwhile doesn't rely on surprise for its value.

I used to live in Brighton! a town over now. Hooray, more opponauts in the area! I wouldn't worry about it ruining the show for you. Going to the show is a totally different experience than reading about it.

All the websites will have everything even before the public gets in, I wouldn't say it's worth avoiding for 2+ weeks.

I'm going the 25th as well and I will still read Jalopnik, I won't be that surprised but it will still be an awesome experiance!

I think it's not worth avoiding. Because you may miss something awesome because you were focusing on trying to find stuff.

But if you're going for more than one day, why not try to feel like it's 1985 again and get the reports after you've gone on the first day, then see what you may've missed and go again and appreciate it.

I was just in Brighton a week ago. my buddy on silver lake has a sweet garage with lifts there. they've got a Subaru 22b rally car, Nissan gtr, 2013 and 2003 Mitsubishi evos. they're living the dream haha

This is true. I'm starting to think along the lines knowing where and what I want to see by reading the reports.

Then it's better to plan ahead what you want to see better... I've tried avoiding news to go to auto shows, but this only made me miss things because I was focused on others.

I had never thought of it that way. As a Millenial, I've always been in a position to comb through every car show online thanks to car review agencies. I can't imagine how exciting it must have been before the internet when the fastest way to learn about new cars was to actually go to the auto show since all published car articles came out in print after the show ended.
